TikTok is more popular than ever – so popular, in fact, that the US government wanted to ban it? That’s not what we are here for but the point is, TikTok continues to grow daily.

Now is the time to take advantage of the fastest-growing social media platform and work on growing your following. You can use TikTok for so many reasons including building your brand, promoting your business, or simply sharing what you love to do.

I’ll give you a few tips and tricks that I’ve learned along the way to help get more TikTok followers to your account.

1. Pick a niche and your target audience

Most of us have multiple talents and passions but it’s important to try to hone down a specific niche if you are trying to grow your TikTok following.

Narrowing down to a specific niche will help your audience understand what your content is about. For instance, if you post a try-on haul one day and then post a cooking video the next day, viewers can be confused about your content and not follow you.

That’s not to say that your niche can’t be broad. You can choose the lifestyle niche and do a try-on haul in one video and then switch over to a GRWM video the next day. These videos are in the same category so your audience won’t mind the different video types.

That’s not to say that you can post videos that are off the niche topic sometimes, especially when you gain a following and they are more interested in the intricate details of your life.

2. Post videos on a consistent schedule

To gain a following on any social media platform, you should post videos on a consistent schedule. There seems to be a bit of a debate on how much content TikTokers should be posting in a day, but I would say at least one video a day is a good starting point.

One video a day seems like a lot, but keep in mind that your TikTok videos don’t have to be that long to gain traction, which leads me to my next suggestion…

3. Focus on shorter video content

Since the Creator Rewards program was announced, it seems like everyone is focused on creating videos that are longer than a minute, but shorter videos seem to do better on TikTok. It’s also easier to keep the viewer’s attention and get more TikTok followers with a shorter video.

Until you reach the threshold of about 10k followers, focus on short videos that show as much as your personality as possible.

Viewers aren’t really interested in longer videos until they know you a little better. It’s also so much easier to post consistently when you aren’t worried about posting longer videos.

4. Use trending audio in your videos

Did you know that you could use a trending sound on mute? Well, you can, and it’s a great way to get your video on the For You Page.

Be sure to use a trending sound on your video regardless of whether or not it’s actually being played. Add the sound to your video and put it on mute if you’re doing a story time or GRWM video.

The best way to know what sounds are trending on TikTok is to consistently consume TikTok content or search for “trending sounds” in the search box. You’ll see a short list of popular sounds, but you can expand that list by clicking see more at the top right corner.

5. Make story-time videos

Who doesn’t love a bit of juicy gossip? Turns out, stranger gossip is just as interesting as gossip about about someone you know.

If you have a story that is filled with drama, now might be the time to tell it. Of course, it all depends on how comfortable you feel letting complete strangers know about your life, but the payoff could result in a larger following.

If you’re still shy about posting your personal business, you can tell a story about someone you know. You would definitely want to get permission first and be sure to omit real names.

6. Participate in TikTok trends or challenges

If you ask me, trends and challenges are what makes TikTok so unique. The great thing about trends is that they seem to stick around for a while too.

Trends are also great because you can incorporate a lot of them into almost any niche. TikTok is the place to show your uniqueness, so don’t be afraid to put a personal twist on a trend or challenge.

There are even trends that are dedicated to growing your following, but in my experience, they did a bit more harm than good.

The best way to know what’s trending is to see what’s on your For You Page consistently, or by going to the “Discover” tab in your TikTok App. There you’ll see some trending hashtags to get you pointed in the right direction.

7. Use hashtags on your videos

Hashtags have been around for a while now and they haven’t gone away with TikTok. When you make a video, make it a priority to add hashtags in your caption so that the algorithm can get an idea of what your video is about.

This should help get your video in front of viewers that typically consume similar content. Some people even search by hashtag in the TikTok search box so your video could show up more quickly for them.

A popular hashtag on TikTok is #fyp, which means “For You Page”. There is no real evidence that this gets your video out to the For You Page any faster than others, but it doesn’t hurt to try!

The more viewers that you get, the more potential to get more TikTok followers.

8. Create a video series

Get more followers by creating a video series that encourages viewers to follow you to get the next part of the series.

Are you working on a home remodel? Is there a large DIY project you have in the works? Are you rebuilding an old car? These are all examples of things that you can turn into a series.

We love seeing other people do things that we’ll never do. Will I ever rebuild an old car? No. Will I happily watch someone else get an old car running again? Yes.

The point is you can get more followers by simply showing parts of your life that you are already doing routinely.

9. Use a call-to-action at the end of your videos

A simple way to get more TikTok followers is to simply ask the viewers to follow you. At the end of your videos be sure to use a call-to-action like, “Follow me for more [insert niche] content.” If you’re in the cooking niche you can simply end the video by saying “Follow me for more delicious recipes.”

Since many of your initial new views will be coming from the For You Page, it can be easy to forget to actually follow the content creator when someone is done viewing the video. If someone makes it to the end of your video, it’s safe to assume they liked the content they saw.

Invite those new views to continue getting your updates by following your Profile.

10. Stitch popular videos

If there is a video that is already going viral, try stitching it. I mean, have you heard of Susi pesto? For a while, all I saw were Susi pesto stitches on my For You Page and I watched every single one of them.

The beauty of TikTok is that it is possible, dare I say even normal to ride off of the success for others. It is completely acceptable to stitch an already popular video with a response. Some stitched videos do even better than the original video.

The beauty of stitched videos is that the original content creator is linked in the caption so you don’t have to worry about going back and giving the original creator credit in the caption.

11. Try Going Live

Once you reach about 1000 followers, TikTok will allow you to go live. Going live is a great way for people to get to see your personality in real-time.

Going live can be nerve-wracking at first, but if you have enough followers to go live, it means that you already have content they are interested in. You can go live doing a GRWM or working on a project and just answer questions as they pop in.

Be sure that you are in a safe space to go live get a moderator in case you get any spammy accounts that are up to no good.

12. Check your TikTok Insights

TikTok lets you know how many followers you gain from each video that you post. You can check your TikTok insights and create more content like the videos that are getting you more TikTok followers.

This can also help you streamline your audience if you’re posting content in multiple different niches.

You can check your TikTok Insights by going to a video you’ve posted and clicking “more insights” in the bottom right corner. You should see a screen similar to the one below:

Take a look a your Key metrics to see which videos are working out for you.

13. Be yourself & have patience

Don’t forget to be your authentic self. If you start your TikTok trying to portray a lifestyle or personality that isn’t you, you’ll have a hard time trying to keep up the lie.

Being yourself guarantees that you’ll never run out of content and you’re less likely to feel burnt out posting so frequently.

Unless you go viral, it can take some time to get more TikTok followers so just have fun and have a bit of patience!
